Furfural
Furfural is deduced from the Latin word "furfur", which means bran and refers to its usual source. It is a natural component of many plants - obtained by heating with sulfuric acid, e.g. from crop byproducts like sugarcane bagasse, or as indicated above - bran.
Furfural is an oily, light yellowish to dark brownish, toxic liquid, which has the typical odour of almonds. Furfural is easily soluble in oils and fats, but hardly soluble in water.
